Record-breaking basketball coach dies of cancer

SIOUX FALLS - Fred Tibbetts, who set records for most wins and a 111-game win streak in girls' basketball, died Sunday of colon cancer.

He was 58.

His Sioux Falls Roosevelt teams won six state Class AA titles and went on a 111-game winning streak from 1997 to 2002. Before that, Tibbetts' teams won five state titles at Jefferson High School.

His prep teams qualified for the state tournament 19 times and amassed 551 wins. He broke up his high school coaching career by coaching the University of South Dakota women to a 66-47 record in four seasons.
