A Box Elder family is homeless after gale-force winds peeled the roof off their mobile home Thursday night.

The family of five was home at the time that the thunderstorm passed over the neighborhood on Line Road, about a mile southeast of Box Elder. The National Weather Service calculated winds at 60 mph.

About 6 p.m., resident Carla Rabbit called the Box Elder Police Department and reported the damage. Department patrolman Jason Dubbs said that although the house is in a cluster of homes, no other damages were reported in the area.

The Black Hills Area Chapter of the American Red Cross stepped in and moved the family to a hotel in Rapid City.

No one was injured, and none of the family's food or belongings was destroyed, although the home is unlivable, Richard Smith of the Red Cross said.

The local relief agency is working with the Salvation Army to help the family, based on an evaluation of their needs. The family will stay in the hotel for three days, giving them time to search for new living arrangements.

If others have experienced damage like this, they are asked to call the American Red Cross at 888-271-3130.
