Rapid City police on Friday continued to search for the man responsible for stabbing a convenience store customer Thursday afternoon.

Tyron Smith, 24, of Rapid City suffered a superficial stab wound in the back. He was treated at and released from Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Smith told investigators that, in arriving at the station, he saw a black man in his early 40s, about 6 feet tall with curly hair, and wearing a red shirt and white sneakers. Smith said he had seen the man previously at the day labor hiring office in north Rapid. The man was talking to himself, and at one point, Smith responded "whatever guy … whatever dude," police Sgt. Elias Diaz said.

Smith said that he did not see the knife or attacker as he stooped to air up the tires on his vehicle at the Big D station at West Chicago and Sturgis Road.

After getting in his vehicle, he discovered he was bleeding. The attack occurred about 5 p.m., Diaz said.

The description matches that of a man who frequents the bike path area near Prairie Market on New York Street. People with information about the stabbing suspect are asked to call the Rapid City Police Department, 394-4131.
