Average statewide gasoline prices in South Dakota hit a record high Friday at just over $3.53 a gallon.

"I really thought we were going to cap at around $3.50 a gallon. However, as the price of crude continues to go through the stratosphere, that is driving these pump prices," said Mark Madieja, a spokesman for AAA in Sioux Falls.

Madieja said gas prices in the Sioux Falls and Rapid City metropolitan areas are a bit lower than the statewide average.
