PIERRE - A Pierre High School football player collapsed during a pregame warmup, and medical personnel used a portable defibrillator to shock his heart into beating.
Senior center Taylor Maier has a history of heart problems but had a doctor's permission to play in the game on Saturday against Mitchell.
Maier's aunt, Dawnita Forell, says he is resting and undergoing tests at the North Central Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Pierre athletic director Dan Whalen says coaches and trainers from both teams attended to Maier when he collapsed. Doctors came out of the stands to help out, along with an ambulance crew.
Officials say a defibrillator was used on Maier before he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
Whalen says a defibrillator is present at every football practice and game.
