PIERRE - A state official says South Dakota is running short of state highway money to pay for road maintenance and other work that can be financed only with state money.

State Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist says the state used to have plenty of money for maintenance and other things that must be financed with just state money.

But Bergquist told a legislative committee that once South Dakota uses state money to match all available federal highway funds, there is not enough money to cover all the maintenance that should be done.
