To blame Mayor Allender for the closing of the Sears and Toys "R" Us stores in Rapid City is totally unfair. It is not Mayor Allender's fault that nationally both Sears and Toys "R" Us seem to be slowly going bankrupt.
When did "having compassion" turn into ever-expanding services, larger facilities, and well-intentioned giving that enable people in need to take no/little accountability for themselves? It looks like the Collective Impact homeless campus will be the next big step on this path.
The “you can’t smoke past here” lines at the civic center need to be enforced and moved to one side or the other. Nonsmokers are forced to walk through it to get in the building. We don’t want cancer.
Of course we need a facility for our homeless but combining that with a detox unit a five-minute walk from our downtown is extremely poor planning. I only hope there is a plan to implement if it destroys our tourist industry, as it's already dangerous to walk downtown at night.
