PIERRE | A South Dakota official says work is expected to begin in late September on a new State Veterans Home after the facility was redesigned to lower costs.

The Legislature had authorized spending $41.3 million in state and federal money to build a new 100-bed home on the same Hot Springs property where the current facility is located. But the project was held up when the lowest bid indicated the project could cost $10 million more.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard adviser Eric Matt told a state legislative committee on Wednesday that design changes have been made to bring the project cost back below the authorized level. He says the redesigned facility will still provide great services for patients.

Matt says construction might be completed by November 2015.
