Twenty-one years to the day of the Ultramax Ammunition plant fire — May 8, 1997 — Rapid City fire crews were battling a blaze in which they also had to contend with exploding ammunition.

The Sweeney Fire started on the corner of 7th and Main Street in Rapid and devastated the former State Theater, Gimpel's Saddle Shop, the Corn Exchange and First Stop Gun Shop.  Much like the Ultramax Fire, the pops of exploding ammunition at First Stop Gun Stop were heard at the scene of the fire.
