A Montana man who was staying at a local motel was arrested Friday in Rapid City and charged with 10 counts of possession, manufacture or distribution of child pornography.

Bond was set at $250,000 for Michael C. Black Burn, 62, of Belgrade, Mont., when he made his initial court appearance via teleconference Monday from the Pennington County Jail.

Black Burn, a transient roofer, was arrested Friday at the motel, according to Pennington County deputy State’s Attorney Lara Roetzel.

Roetzel argued for a higher bond since Black Burn is from out of state. He also is likely to face additional state charges once a forensic examination of his computer his complete, Roetzel said. There also is the possibility of federal charges, she said.

Black Burn’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by several South Dakota law enforcement agencies, according to Brian Mueller, chief deputy for the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Information provided by another jurisdiction was instrumental in the arrest, he said.

“Members of the local Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force from the state Division of Criminal Investigation, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and Rapid City Police Department were involved in the investigation,” Mueller said.

Each child pornography charge carries a maximum potential of up to 10 years in prison.
