Snap decisions have impaired the public's enjoyment of Mount Rushmore. Having a display in heavy fog may have met the needs of the management to get rid of the fireworks, however; it did not provide the public with the intended benefit. A postponed display would have been a more desirable solution for the public. The decision to cancel this year's fireworks to avoid the danger of fire is also a snap decision that should have been considered in light of possible remedies.

With ample supplies of water, we have the ability to thoroughly soak the immediate area around Mount Rushmore a couple of hours prior to the display. We can also have fire control teams stationed outside of the wetted area.

It is puzzling that these solutions were not offered as alternatives prior to simply cancelling the event. Mount Rushmore is intended for the public's benefit, not the ease of management. An alternative to denying the public's benefit is to change the management. We still have time to review and possibly change this undesirable course of action.
