SIOUX FALLS | Opponents of changes to zoning laws in Sioux Falls have submitted more than 6,500 signatures on petitions seeking a public vote.

The signatures must be validated. The opposition group needs 5,120 valid names to force an election.

The Argus Leader reports (http://argusne.ws/10sZzln ) that more than 150 petitioners gathered signatures over two weeks, often in the midst of stormy weather.

Opponents say the zoning law changes would ease requirements for developers and give the public less of a say in what can be built. Their primary concern is a proposed new Walmart Supercenter in the city.
