PIERRE | South Dakota officials are urging the US Army Corps of Engineers to conserve water in Missouri River reservoirs as dry conditions limit water flows into the system.

State officials planned to submit a letter at a meeting in Pierre that was canceled due to bad weather Wednesday. The letter recommending ways to manage the river now has been sent to the Corps of Engineers.

The state asks the corps not to release water to support barge traffic in areas with no commercial barges. It also says it backs the plan to maintain steady or rising water levels in Fort Peck, Sakakawea and Oahe lakes to support spring fish spawning.

State officials also want accurate forecasts of water levels so they can plan for keeping boat ramps open on Lake Oahe.
