PIERRE - Nineteen schools have signed up to offer competitive dance, competitive cheer, or both as the newest activities sanctioned by the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

Competition is divided into three classifications based on enrollment. A state tournament is scheduled Nov. 10 at Yankton.

The SDHSAA board approved the new activities in an effort to increase participation by girls.

Schools offering competitive cheer are Brandon Valley, Corsica, Dell Rapids, Faulkton, Gregory, Lyman, Redfield, Sioux Falls Christian, Sioux Valley, South Central and White River.

Schools offering competitive dance are Belle Fourche, Lead-Deadwood and St. Thomas More.

Five schools offer both activities: Aberdeen Central, Brookings, Douglas, Huron and Yankton.
