Sheep will take center stage at the Black Hills Stock Show today, with a host of sheep-related events set for the Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds.
Big events at All-American Sheep Day include the North American Sheep Dog Trials (prelims at 11 a.m., finals at 7:30 p.m.); the National Sheep Shearing Competition (10 a.m.); and the fan-favorite Mutton Bustin' Contest, in which children ages 3-6 will do their best to ride a running sheep for six seconds (7 p.m.)
The daylong celebration of ewes will also feature a new event, the Sheep Teepee Competition, in which participants must tackle a ewe, pin her to the ground and erect a teepee over her before dashing back to the finish line (7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.) The day will also include numerous displays about sheep and the sheep industry.
At Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, top rodeo performers will take to the ring in the Barnett Arena for a PRCA Rodeo hosted by Rodeo Rapid City at 7:30 p.m., which will also include bullfighting semifinals and the finals of the trick riding (trick riding prelims at 1 p.m.)
Also today, the mounted shooting competition is free to the public and is set for 9 a.m. at the Barnett Arena in the civic center.
