While the official kick off is Friday, the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo starts to rev up today.

The day kicks off at 8 a.m. with the final day of the Zoetis Winter Classic American Quarter Horse Association Horse Show at the James Kjerstad Event Center.

Today's events will feature halter, cattle cutting and roping classes.

The events are popular with both seasoned stock show attendees or for those visiting for the first time.

"Cutting and roping will be fast-paced and fun to watch," said Jill Swanhorst, coordinator with the Central States Fair and Black Hills Stock Show.

The other big event of the day is stray gathering.

In this event, four-man teams break into two pairs and each pair turns and ropes two steers.

The rules for the event are fierce: Participants can only rope with their designated partner and they can only rope once. Any three of the steers legs need to be tied and the tie must last for at least six seconds.

Participants have just two minutes to complete the event.

Watch the competition at 7 p.m. at the James Kjerstad Event Center and stick around afterward for live music from Thirsty Fish.
