The 2013 Black Hills Stock Show Youth Day on Jan. 26 featured increased participation from youth and new awards.

Participants from South Dakota and five neighboring states came together to compete in youth-in-action events for horse and livestock along with taking part in a dog show and beef cook-off challenge.

This year, the Youth Day Dog Show was one of the largest in the last 30 years. Thirty-six dogs and 32 contestants showed off their skills in obedience, rally, agility, and showmanship. First place prizes in each class and age division were awarded. Results for first place in the Obedience divisions are as followed: Basic A: Beginner: Ashlyn Augustine, Box Elder; Junior: Drew Bittner, Belle Fourche; Senior: Ali Davis, Rapid City; Basic B: Beginner: Amber Kelly, Rapid City; Junior: Daniel Shuster, Rapid City; Senior: Lothario Kelly, Rapid City; Pre-Novice: Junior: Catherine Maher, Rapid City; Senior: Hannah Jo Selan, Custer; Novice: Senior: Breanne Kuehler, Black Hawk.

Rally winners were: Novice: Beginner: Teneesha Larson, Belle Fourche; Junior: Catherine Maher, Rapid City; Senior: Micaela Raymond, Rapid City; Advanced A: Junior: Molly Schwartz, Rapid City; Senior: Taren Jones, Custer; and Advanced B: Junior: Catherine Maher, Rapid City; Staysha Smith, Rapid City. Top individuals in Agility for On Leash were: Beginner: Teneesha Larson, Belle Fourche; Junior: Daniel Shuster, Rapid City; and Senior: Heath Hunsaker, Hermosa. Off Leash Agility winner was Hannah Jo Selan, Custer. Advanced Agility Junior winner was Catherine Maher, Rapid City and Senior winner was Heath Hunsaker, Hermosa.

Showmanship winners in the novice division were: Beginner: Alexis Augustine, Box Elder; Junior: Will Inghram, Beulah, WY; and Senior: Ali Davis, Rapid City. Open Showmanship first place in the junior division went to Catherine Maher, Rapid City and senior division was Hannah Jo Selan, Custer.

The Horse Quiz Bowl was challenging and exciting to watch with 17 teams competing for the top position. Champion team went to Butte/Lawrence County, team members include; Sentel Johnson, Sydney Sleep, Ryder Heitz and KeAnna Ward. Reserve was awarded to the Chippewa, Minnesota team; team members include; Sora Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Abby Spence and Caleb Johnson. Top three individuals who scored the most points during the quiz bowl were also recognized with special awards. They were: first place Sentel Johnson, Butte/Lawrence County; second place Morgan Johnson, Chippewa, Minnesota; and third place, Abby Spence, Chippewa, Minnesota.

Seventy-three 4-H youth in the horse project also showed off their knowledge in the Hippology Contest were they competed individually and as a team to solve problems and identify horse parts, equipment, and more. In the junior division, first place team went to the Minnesota State 4-H team: Kristina Packer, Caitlin Jordan, Sydney Jordan and Lexi Ziebol. Second place team was from Butte/Lawrence County: Gretchen Satzinger, Sierra Ward, Lily Voorhis and Trenton Larson. Top three individuals in the junior division were: first place, Kristina Packer, Minnesota State 4-H; second place, Sara Johnson, Chippewa, Minnesota; third place, Lexi Ziebol, Minnesota State 4-H. In the senior division, first place team was Custer: Samantha Persinger, Lillie Woods, Micaela Raymond and Gina Elmore. The second place team was Brown: Adrianne Schaunaman, Colt Hokana, Kaitlynn Ringgenberg and Joellen Gonsoir. Topthree seniors were: first Josh Johnson, Chippewa, Minnesota; second place, Rachel Schmitz, Holt; and third place, Sentel Johnson, Butte/Lawrence County.

Livestock Judging

Over 150 youth competed in the livestock judging contest. Youth evaluated beef cattle, pigs and Boer goats, along with practicing their communication skills by giving oral reasons. Top three individuals in each age division were recognized. In the Beginners; first place was Korbin Leddy, Grant; second place was Danika Gordon, Butte/Lawrence; and third place was Laney MacKaben, Butte/Lawrence County. Juniors were: first Brooke Lidholt, Custer, Mont.; second place, Emma Ackerman; and third place, Sierra Lee, Bowman, N.D. Top seniors were: first place, Justin Irgens, Baker, Mont., FFA; second place, Rhett Fox, Bowman, N.D.; and third place, Amanda Williams, Miles City, Mont.

Other Butte/Lawrence participants included beginners: Shyanne Howell, Tommy Myers, Layla Hockenbary, Dakota Whitman, Serena Davis, Kane Grant, Cole Hockenbary, Lexa Burtzlaff, Matea Gordon, Aiken Crowley, Carlee Vavra and Carlie Kissack. Juniors: John Marrs, Collin Hockenbary, Tye Davis, Shayney Peterson, Brody Whitman, Stran Holben, Bridger Gordon, Alison Ferris, Keith Grant, Payton Burtzlaff, Shayla Howell, Tate Olson, Tee McAmis, Tel Montgomery, Joanna Habeck, and Salena Myers. Seniors: Callie Kukuchka, Carson Sleep, Trevor Garman, Sydney Sleep, Kelly Montgomery, Taylor Vavra, Molly O’Connell, Corey Hockenbary, and Devin Garza.

Livestockology Contest

Livestock youth also had the opportunity to compete in the Livestockology contest were they were quizzed on basic production knowledge of beef, sheep, and swine. Kids completed a quiz, station identification, gave a team oral presentation, and finished a team challenge problem. Top two teams in juniors and seniors were recognized. First place senior team was Hughes County: Haley Ketteler, Mariah Kessler, Chauncey Trapp, and Jonalyn Beastrom. Second place team was Haakon/Jackson County: Seth Haigh, Makenzie Stilwell, Shaina Solon, and Elle Moon. The Butte/Lawrence team placed third with members Callie Kukuchka, Carson Sleep, Taylor Vavra and Kelly Montgomery. Top three seniors were also recognized: 1st Mariah Kessler, Hughes; 2nd Haley Ketteler, Hughes; and 3rd Callie Kukuchka, Butte/Lawrence. In the junior division, 1st place team was Hughes County: Will Kessler, Jacob Beastrom, and Emily Trapp. Second place team was Butte/Lawrence Team 1: Payton Burtzlaff, Tye Davis, and Tee McAmis. Butte/Lawrence Team 2 members Serena Davis, Carlee Vavra, Laney Mackaben, and Lexa Burtzlaff placed third. Top three juniors individuals were: first place, Jacob Beastrom, Hughes; second place, Will Kessler, Hughes; and third place, Tye Davis, Butte/Lawrence County.

Beef Cook-Off Challenge

In the Beef Cook-Off Challenge youth can showed off their culinary styles by preparing a dish utilizing beef as the main ingredient. This event was sponsored by the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, South Dakota Beef Industry Council, and Western Buffalo Company of Rapid City. This year in the beginner division first place was Korbin Leddy, Grant; second place, Jayden Carrier, Custer and third place, Layla Hockenbary, Butte/Lawrence. Butte/Lawrence had a clean sweep in the Junior division with Lisa Smith earning top honors, second place, Caitlin Ringling; and third place, Bridger Gordon. In the senior division, Kiera Leddy from Grant was awarded first place. Other Butte/Lawrence participants were Cole Hockenbary, and Collin Hockenbary.
