Rapid City police charged three juvenile boys with breaking windows at Robbinsdale Elementary School just before 1 a.m. Thursday.

A 17-year-old and two 14-year-old boys are accused of breaking 20 windows at Robbinsdale and several windows and glass doors at South Middle School, according to police spokeswoman Tarah Heupel.

Damage to the two schools is estimated at approximately $4,000, Heupel said.

Police are still investigating the incident and suspect that a larger group could be involved.

Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is asked to call the Rapid City Police Department at 394-4134 or send an anonymous tip by texting ‘RCPD’ and the info to 847411.

School District owns the buildings, so the City has nothing to say about repairs, money will come out of District budget. Restitution by the kids is good idea, working with custodial staff is also the right thing to do. Community Service is usually condition of probation if case goes that way.

Instead of sitting in detention, they should have to help replace the windows. Then they need to work off the cost by helping the janitors at the schools for enough hours to equal the cost of what their parents have to pay. Hopefully their parents will also require them to put in enough hours at home, or somewhere else, to reimburse them too.

Hopefully the city will make the parents pony up for the damage and let the juvies rot in detention!
