BROOKINGS | Edward James Bain Sr., 87, passed away March 7, 2018, at Edgewood Vista.
Edward James Bain Sr. was born on April 29, 1930, son of Walter and Violet (Glenn) Bain in Bushnell, SD. He attended and graduated from Bushnell Country School and received his GED while serving in the United States Air Force.
Edward worked for Bailey Tire Shop in Brookings until his enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1951. He had a long and distinguished career in the Air Force, retiring in 1974. His military service encompassed two tours of duty in Korea, one tour in Vietnam, as well as numerous stations in the United States.
Ed married Irene Becker on June 24, 1953, in White, SD. Together they were blessed to have and raise three children: one son, Edward Jr. and two daughters, Carla and Sheri.
After retiring from the Air Force, Ed and Irene bought acreage in Brookings County and Ed had a cow-calf operation. The two of them moved to Brookings in 1996. Ed worked part time for Parks and Recreation in the summer for a few years. Ed moved to Edgewood in March 2017.
Ed is survived by his wife, Irene of Brookings; son, Edward Jr. (Donna) Bain of Volga; daughters, Carla (Alex) Akamine of California, and Sheri (Sam Gunderson) Polenz Bain of Rapid City; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a sister, Mary (Larry) Kappenman of Las Gatos, CA; and brother-in-law, Mervin Eastberg of Watertown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Mark Polenz; two brothers, Francis and Benny Bain; and two sisters, Goldie Beynon and Lorraine Eastberg.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. CST on Monday, March 12, at GracePoint Wesleyan Church, with visitation one hour prior. Burial of cremated remains will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Food Pantry or Salvation Army.
