KEARNS, Utah | Garry Lee Carsten, 67, was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, while at home in Kearns.
Garry was born July 6, 1950, in Platte, SD, to Guy and Jeannie (Greene) Carsten. They lived on a farm then moved to Lead, SD, in 1957, where he attended the rest of his school years. He went to auto mechanic school in Denver, CO.
He served in the U.S. Army. His military base was at Fort Ord, CA. While in the Army, Garry was stationed in Hawaii, Okinawa, Philippines, Germany, and Vietnam.
During his life Garry worked at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead. He was an auto mechanic, a tow truck driver, and a cross country truck driver. While living in the Salt Lake City, UT, area he worked at Carastar & Aspen Mill Works.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Johnson of Kearns; daughter, Alexa (Terry) Pierce, of Rapid City and her children, Samantha, Jamie, & Stephanie; daughter, Heather (Bill) Chesney of Littleton, CO, and her children, Todd Jr., Shawndor, Rex & Angela; daughter, Trisha Marquiss of Boerne, TX, and her children, Kasey, Ethan, Megan & Bentley; and son, Garry (Amber) Scroggs of San Antonio, TX, and his children Austin & Halie. He is also survived by two brothers, Guy Carsten II and Gene (Lisa) Carsten, both of Rapid City; one sister, Lynnette (Rich) Woods of Lincoln, NE; a stepsister, Bernita (Myron) Pound of Rapid City; and five great-grandchildren, Miracle, Halie, Dameon, Serenity, & Harmony
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy Carsten Sr. & Jeannie Carsten; and two grandsons, Jamie Adam Carsten & Kasey Aaron Hudson.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at Kirk Funeral Home. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
