Overpopulation our biggest threat

The number of "modern human beings" (Homo Sapiens) on Earth has been comparatively small until very recently. Just 10,000 years ago there might have been no more than a few million people on the planet. Now, the world's population is over 7.3 billion. According to United Nation predictions, it could reach 9.7 billion people by 2050 and over 11 billion people by 2100. That is the elephant in the room.

Overpopulation is the condition of having a population so great as to cause environmental deterioration or an impaired quality of life. Our species is in excess of the environment's healthy carrying capacity. We have ushered in the "Sixth Great Extinction Event." Sadly, we have to say goodbye to the northern white rhino and many more species. The Earth is losing plants, animals, arable land, and clean water at an alarming rate.

Several Native American tribes say we need to plan ahead for seven generations — about 120 years. Seven major cities could soon run out of clean drinking water. At the current rate of production, oil will run out in 53 years, natural gas in 54, and coal in 110. We need to plan ahead. We need to move to renewable energy now.

Rossknecht for county commission

We have a good opportunity on June 5 to elect a candidate that has years of experience in valuing real estate in western South Dakota. Ron Rossknecht can bring 30 years of appraisal experience to the table.

This experience involves property assessments, assessment appeals, property values, market rents, zoning, future land use, vacation of section lines, relocation of section lines, platting process, re-platting process, special use permits, variances, easements and so on. Over the years Ron has directly worked with most Pennington County department heads and respects them as they respect him.

Real estate appraisers in South Dakota are held to strict set of ethics and standards that I believe would greatly benefit the current commission and future commissions. Make the smart choice this June, vote for Ron Rossknecht.

Re-elect Hadcock to commission

This letter is an endorsement for Deb Hadcock. Deb is running for Pennington County Commission in District 3. I have had the pleasure of knowing Deb for a long time. One of her great characteristics is that she calls a spade a spade. And she is not afraid to fight for what is right.

She would make a great commissioner. Please consider Deb for this position. She will do a great job for the people of Rapid City.
