Gun owners should back some restrictions
South Dakota hunters and sportsmen had better change their hardline views on some modifications to the national gun laws concerning semi-automatic guns and high-capacity magazines or in a not-too-distant future Washington, D.C., will ban all new semi-autos and maybe even take the guns we have.
I have been a gun owner and hunter in South Dakota for over 50 years and currently own two semi-automatics, a 12-gauge shotgun for pheasants that holds five shells, and a 9mm pistol for personal protection that holds 14 rounds. We have some gun control now; we can’t have full autos without a special FFL license.
I propose a new level of scrutiny for all semi-autos that are capable of holding more than six rounds, somewhere between the current simple registration and the very restrictive FFL full-auto restrictions. Some of the questions that would need to be answered may be: where will the gun be stored, and who will have access to the gun? After the last school shooting, momentum will build for more restrictions. Let’s get ahead of them and propose some that we can live with.
