Parking ticket policy failing
I see again that the Rapid City Council has decided to forgive the parking meter fines for the second time now.
What is the purpose of having parking enforcement staff if there is no deterrent? Why even have parking meters? I say we follow the Philadelphia Parking Authority and from now on anyone who has three unpaid tickets they get there car either "booted" or towed away.
Perhaps we should have the mayor hire another consultant to consider this matter.
Climate change causing disasters
One could argue that sacrifices made for the welfare of others is one of the greatest acts accomplished by humans. Our modern industrialized society is calling us to make sacrifices.
2017 was a record-setting year. It was the hottest non-El Nino year on record, and the U.S. spent a record $306 billion in disaster relief. Our planet is warming, and the arctic is warming faster than the middle latitudes causing instability in the jet stream. These changes play a significant role in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events such as drought, wildfires, flooding and hurricanes. Climate scientists warn us that these changes are being caused by huge amounts of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Something needs to be done; sacrifices must be made. Both the Citizens Climate Lobby and the Climate Leadership Council are proposing a market-based carbon fee and dividend system that will mitigate the necessary sacrifices.
We must put aside our divisions and differences for the well-being of ourselves and future generations. I urge you to research the two above organizations, get involved with their efforts to enhance our society’s sustainability, and let our members of Congress know about your concerns.
