Pine Ridge's Pond signs with BHSU

The Black Hills State women's basketball team added three players to its 2013 recruiting class earlier this week. Shanna Halalio, Lauren Yowell and Brooke Pond all pledged to play their college basketball for head coach Mark Nore.

Pond attended Pine Ridge High School, where she made the 'A' Honor Roll from 2009-12 and was a member of the National Honor Society from 2011-13. She helped lead the Lady Thorpes to a state tournament appearance in 2012 before a knee injury in volleyball wiped out her 2012-13 season.

Halalio comes to BHSU after having played two seasons at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyo., where she was named All-Region after averaging 15.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

Yowell attended Ralston Valley High in Arvada, Colo., where she earned four varsity letters in basketball and three in volleyball.

Jackets hosting alumni volleyball match

Black Hills State head volleyball coach Sally Nichols and her team will welcome nine alumni back to play a friendly match versus the current Yellow Jacket team to wrap up spring practices at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Young Center.

The second-annual Aces with Familiar Faces scrimmage will include the participation of long time, 13-year head coach and current BHSU Director of Athletics, Jhett Albers, as head coach of the alumni team. His son and former assistant coach, Austin Albers, will be the scrimmage's referee.

Current assistant coach and former BHSU All-American player, Kristin Carmichael, will also be competing alongside the former players who all played under Albers.

The alumni match will be six-on-six, best of three, with scoring for each game being first to 25.

Following the alumni match, the Green vs. Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage will take place between the current team members which is scheduled to last until 3 p.m.

The team's banquet to honor the 2012 Yellow Jacket volleyball team will take place on Saturday night at The Lodge at Deadwood, where 33 parents of the players will be attending.

Who would you take No. 1?

Who would you take No. 1?

There's been a lot of debate lately as folks feel like Duke's Jahlil Okafor may have played himself out of the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

Does anybody (ever) beat the 'Cats?

Does anybody (ever) beat the 'Cats?

I'm not a fan of Kentucky or John Calipari but I can give the Wildcats the respect they're due.
