Todd McPherson is a busy guy.
Between helping his
11-year-old son, Alex, with a blossoming motocross career and a daughter, Kassi, who rodeos, McPherson, a Rapid City auctioneer, doesn’t know if he’s coming or going.
“I have no time for work,” he said with a laugh.
On Saturday, Todd will be helping Alex compete in the sixth and next-to-last round of Black Hills Arena Racing Winter Indoor Series at the recently-renamed Commissioner James Kjerstad Events Center at the Central States Fairgrounds.
Alex McPherson leads the points standings in the 65cc (7-11) and 80cc (7-11) divisions with just Saturday’s races and the double-points championship night on April 11 left in the season.
On March 27, Todd and Alex plan to race in Denver to try to qualify for the Arenacross World Finals in May in Las Vegas.
Racing in the Black Hills Arena Racing series is a good way to keep the racing skills honed for what is all but a year-round activity for motocrossers such as McPherson.
“Living up north, we’re so much at the mercy of the weather,” Todd said. “It’s been extremely hard to get out and ride and practice with the weather the way it’s been. He made it out this week and had a pretty good practice. Getting back on the bike and getting some confidence back in between races is pretty big.”
Alex also had success in the South Dakota Motocross Association Series, winning the 55cc (9-12) points title last summer, and also plans to race the Central States Fair Supercross on Aug. 20.
Kassi teamed with Clay O’Daniel of Oglala to win the ribbon roping world championship at the 2009 Little Britches Rodeo in Colorado Springs.
As if he doesn’t have enough on his plate, Todd is also trying to organize a four-race Supercross Series at the Central States Fairgrounds this summer.
“That will keep us hopping,” Todd said.
