After cruising to a win in its Region 8A title game last week, the Belle Fourche volleyball team was looking to keep that momentum as it took on Winner in a Sweet 16 matchup in Wall on Tuesday night.
In what turned out to be a back-and-forth affair, the Broncs dropped the Warriors in five sets to earn their spot in the Class A tournament.
Belle Fourche started off on the right foot, taking a 1-0 lead off of a 25-22 first set victory.
Winner would battle back in the second set, tying the match at one set apiece with a 25-16 win. The Broncs gained back the momentum in the third set with a 25-17 win, before the Warriors tied the match again with a 25-18 fourth set victory.
In the fifth and final set, Belle Fourche took the early advantage before putting the match away with a 15-11 win.
Sierra Ward had a big game for the Broncs, finishing the match with 27 kills and 19 digs, while Mandee Williamson chipped in with 12 kills and five blocks.
Payson Birkeland paced the team with 26 assists, followed by Fallon Budmayr, who finished with 19 assists.
Belle Fourche (30-3) awaits its first round opponent for the Class A state tournament starting Nov. 16.
Meanwhile, Winner closed out the season at 21-10.
FAITH 3, PHILIP 2: Faith bounced back from a 2-1 deficit to pick up a five-set win over the Scotties in the Sweet 16 round of the Class B tournament on Tuesday.
The Longhorns got the jump on Philip early, earning a hard fought 25-23 victory in the first set.
The Scotties would answer back in the second and third sets, scoring a 25-19 win in the second, followed by a dominant 25-8 victory in the third.
Faith (21-11) tied the match at two sets apiece with a 25-21 win in the fourth set, before completing the comeback win with a 15-10 fifth set.
No statistics were made available for this match.
Philip closed out the season at 29-3.
CHESTER AREA 3, TIMBER LAKE 0: Chester earned its spot in the Class B state volleyball tournament with a straight set victory over Timber Lake on Tuesday night.
The Flyers didn’t have much trouble right out of the gates as they took a 1-0 lead on a 25-10 first set victory.
Chester kept its momentum the rest of the way, winning the second set 25-13, before closing out the match with a 25-16 third set victory.
Jadon Wages paced the Flyers with 13 kills and Makenna Larson chipped in with 11. Hailey Ewoldt led the team in assists with 37, while Hanna Reiff had 22 digs.
Loryn Schoelerman led the way for the Panthers with 11 assists, LaShae Nash had eight kills and Lorenda Long tallied 11 digs.
Chester Area (24-4) will play in the state tournament starting Nov. 16, while Timber Lake’s season ends at 18-12.
SIOUX FALLS CHRISTIAN 3, MOBRIDGE-POLLOCK 0: Sioux Falls Christian ran past Mobridge-Pollock in the Sweet 16 round of the Class A tournament on Tuesday.
Christian opened the match with a 25-7 first set win, before sealing the victory with a 25-6 second set, and a 25-11 third set.
No other information was made available for this match.
The season continues for SF Christian at the Class A state tournament Nov. 16, while Mobridge-Pollock closes out the season at 10-19.
SIOUX VALLEY 3, PINE RIDGE 0: Rachel Miller finished with 32 assists, nine digs and two aces to lead Sioux Valley past Pine Ridge in the Sweet 16 round of the Class A tournament on Tuesday night.
The Cossacks kicked off the match with a 25-9 first set, followed by a 25-13 second set to take the 2-0 advantage.
In the third set, Sioux Valley put the match away with a 25-18 victory.
Nikole Ziegler paced the Cossacks in kills with 17, while Lysney Stevens added eight kills and 11 digs.
Sioux Valley (25-4) await the start of the state tourney, while Pine Ridge finished the season at 24-6.
MILLER 3, RAPID CITY CHRISTIAN 0: Miller advanced to the Class A state tournament with a straight-set victory over Rapid City Christian on Tuesday.
The Rustlers took the early advantage right out of the gates with a 25-19 win in the first set.
In the second set, Miller grabbed the 2-0 lead with a 25-15 victory, before sealing the win with a 25-12 third set.
Rachel Oligmueller led the Rustlers with 29 assists, while VonnaGail Schlechter and Kadye Fernholz finished with nine kills apiece.
Miller (25-4) will travel to Rapid for the state tournament Nov. 22, while Rapid City Christian closed out the season at 22-9.
DEUBROOK AREA 3, KADOKA AREA 0: Deubrook earned a Class B state tournament berth with a win over Kadoka Area on Tuesday in Chamberlain.
The Dolphins opened the match with a 25-16 win, before taking the two set advantage with a 25-21 victory in the second.
Kadoka Area kept the third set close, but ultimately fell 26-24.
No other information was made available.
The Kougars close out the season at 26-4.
