The Rapid City Post 22 Expos baseball team cruised past the Post 320 Shooters 14-4 in the consolation round of the Class A Junior Legion baseball tournament at Watertown Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Expos opened with a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning before the Shooters tied the game at two runs apiece as Ian Krump scored on a fielder’s choice.
The Expos regained its early advantage and extended it with a run in the bottom of the second and two more runs in the third.
Up 5-3 in the fourth, the Expos continued to extend their lead with three runs, capped off by a pair of runs scored on a Krump error.
With an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Expos offense erupted for six runs, starting on a two-RBI double from Matthew Hegre.
A short time later, Alex Weaver scored on an error and Jace Caldwell knocked in a run on a double to left field to put the game out of reach.
Drew Messer picked up the win for the Expos on the mound, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out six batters in five innings.
Zach Sumption led Post 22 with three hits and three RBIs while Hegre had two hits and two RBIs and Connor King finished with two hits and one RBI.
The Expos (39-13) will play against an undetermined opponent today, while the loss ended the Shooters season at 28-18.
Spearfish loses high-scoring affair
Vermillion took an early lead and held off a late-game Spearfish rally to pick up the close 13-12 decision on the second day of the South Dakota Class B American Legion baseball tournament in Webster on Saturday afternoon.
Spearfish opened the game with a run but Vermillion answered with a one run in the bottom half of the first and five more runs in the second.
Down 7-1 in the fourth, Spearfish began to cut the early deficit on a Parker Louks RBI double and a Jaxon Rosencranz single.
Vermillion continued to put runs on the board, including two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Spearfish wouldn’t go away without a fight, though, cutting the lead to 13-10 with four runs in the eighth inning.
Spearfish scored a pair of runs in its final opportunity at bat in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough as Vermillion held on for the win.
Jaxon Rosencranz had a big day offensively for Spearfish, going 6-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, and four RBIs. Donovan Bailey chipped in with three hits and two RBIs, Taylor Janovy had two hits and two RBIs and Tyrell Rosencranz finished with three hits and one RBI (including a home run).
Madison holds off Winner/Colome
Madison advanced to the next round of the Class B consolation bracket with a 7-3 win over Winner/Colome on Saturday.
Both teams went scoreless over the first four innings before Madison exploded with all seven of its runs in the bottom half of the fifth.
Winner/Colome attempted to claw its way back into the game with one run in the sixth and two runs in the eighth but fell short.
Riley Janke led Madison with three hits and two RBIs while Mitch Hansen and Tanner Burg finished with two RBIs and one hit apiece.
Reed Harter, Kelly O’Bryan and Drew Demers led the way for Winner/Colome with one RBI apiece.
