The Rapid City Post 22 Hardhats came up short despite a three-run rally in the ninth inning, falling to the Gillette Roughriders 5-4 Wednesday night in American Legion baseball in Gillette, Wyo.
Gillette led the entire way, scoring single runs in the first two innings and leading 2-1 before scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Hardhats had a three-run rally of their own, but needed at least four runs to keep the game going.
In the top of the ninth, Post 22 opened with singles by Ryan Schmidt and Carter Deming, with both baserunners advancing on a wild pitch. With one out, the Hardhats closed the gap on a two-run single by Connor King, and with two outs, they made it 5-4 when King scored on an error.
But Gillette reliever Kaden Race got Matthew Hegre to fly out to center field to end the game.
Post 22 out-hit the Roughriders 12-11, getting three hits from Alex Weaver and two hits each from Jace Caldwell and Schmidt.
Brody Richardson paced the Roughriders, 19-6, with four hits and an RBI, while Caleb Driskill and Dylan Hester added two hits each.
Joseph Harris stymied the Hardhat bats through his seven innings on the mound for Gillette, giving up seven hits but not runs or walks, striking out 12.
Zach Sumption took the loss, giving up five hits and two runs (one earned) in three innings. Tad Scherbenske pitched four scoreless innings and Jack Sorensen gave up three three runs in the eighth.
Post 22, 7-2, will look to bounced back Saturday and Sunday with a three-game home series with Cheyenne Post 6.
