Area Scene: Mines splits on final day of USF tourney
The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team had similar results on Day 2 of the University of Sioux Falls Volleyball Tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday, splitting a pair of matches and giving it a 2-2 overall tournament record.
The Hardrockers defeated Dakota Wesleyan University, 3-1, before falling to a solid Grand View University (Iowa) squad, 0-3. On Friday, the Lady Rockers fell to Briar Cliff University, 0-3, and then bounced back to stomp Iowa Wesleyan, 3-0.
The Hardrockers record is 3-5 on the season.
BHSU splits at Dickinson Triangular
The Black Hills State volleyball team defeated Montana State-Billings and lost to Bemidji State on the final day of the Dickinson Triangular in Dickinson, N.D., on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Montana State-Billings in the first match of the day by scores of 25-19, 14-25, 25-22 and 25-19. Bemidji State knocked off Black Hills State by scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-20.
Yellow Jackets win season opener
The Black Hills State University women’s cross country team scored 20 points en route to a first place finish at the Montana State-Billings Open on Saturday morning.
Black Hills State was led by sophomore Erin Curran. Curran finished second overall and was the top collegiate finisher. She finished the course in 19 minutes, 8 seconds. Abi Bever was the second collegiate finisher. The Yellow Jackets had five runners finish in the top 10 of the meet.
Papendick wins world championship
Kerry Papendick of Rapid City, South Dakota, and her American Quarter Horse, Must Be A Detail, captured the world champion hunter under saddle title at the American Quarter Horse Association Adequan Select World Championship Show in Amarillo, Texas, on Friday.
This show is open exclusively to amateur exhibitors age 50 and over.
Knology to carry NFL RedZone
Knology announced that it has reached a new agreement for carriage of NFL RedZone for its subscribers to complement NFL Network previously launched in December 2009.
Subscribers of Knology SportsPak will have access to NFL RedZone included in their package.
“We understand our customers want more access to NFL games and highlights throughout the upcoming season,” said Tony Palermo, Knology vice president of marketing. “This agreement gives our digital cable subscribers the ability to experience the excitement of NFL red zone action.”
Jacks fall to Phoenix in five
Just a week after opening the season with a perfect 3-0 record, the South Dakota State volleyball team fell to 3-3 on Sunday with a tough five set loss to the Green Bay Phoenix in the final match of the Iowa State Challenge.
The Jacks fell to the Phoenix, who improve to 2-5 with the win, by the scores of 25-27, 25-20, 25-14, 16-25 and 15-12.
Ellyce Youngren led the Jackrabbits with 17 kills and completed her team-high fourth double-double of the season with 13 digs. Kaitlin Klingemann added 12 kills and Kelli Fiegen nine in the loss. Shay Birath led the SDSU defense with 24 digs, while freshman Lexi Fowler saw her first significant action as a Jackrabbit at setter and led the Jacks with 22 set assists.
