Women's basketball: Vedvei, Haughian selected as All-Americans

RAPID CITY - The 2008 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball All-American teams were announced with South Dakota School of Mines senior Melanie Vedvei and Black Hills State University senior Lacey Haughian both receiving first team honors.

Vedvei was a first team selection last season and a second team honoree in 2006. The Lake Preston native injured her knee 19 games into this season but still managed to finish second all-time in points scored for the Lady Hardrockers. Vedvei was also named to the Dakota Athletic Conference first team for the third straight season.

Haughian helped the Lady Yellow Jackets reach the Elite 8 at the national tournament, averaging 21 points and 8 rebounds in three games. The Montana native was also named to the DAC first team for her efforts in 2008.

Black Hills State's Snjezana Dojcinovic and Mayville State's Laura Big Crow, from Pine Ridge, received honorable mention.

Adding to the Lady Yellow Jackets honors, head coach Mark Nore earned Coach of the Year in the DAC Conference. Nore is in his fifth year and is the all-time winningest coach in BHSU Women's basketball history with 102 wins.

NAIA Scholar-Athletes were also announced with Mines players Vedvei and Amber DeWeerd along with Black Hills State's Lindsey Buthe making the list.

Student-Athletes must be nominated by their head coach and maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5.
