Rapid City runner completes run
Rapid City's Daniel Jongeling successfully completed the Medtronic TC 10 Mile on Oct.4, completing the course in 1 hour, 48.02 minutes.
Jongeling was one of 25 Medtronic Global Heroes selected to participate in Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon events.
Global Heroes is a cooperative effort between the Medtronic Foundation and Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. that celebrates the accomplishments of runners who have medical devices to treat conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, spinal disorders, chronic pain or neurological disorders, and whose continued passion for running serves as an inspiration to others.
The Medtronic Foundation launched the program in 2006.
Jongeling, 54, has an ICD to treat an arrhythmia.
"On June 1, 2008, I suffered sudden cardiac arrest approaching the finish line of a 10K race in Steamboat Springs, Colo.," Jongeling said. "Concerned about the possibility of recurrent episodes of ventricular tachycardia, my doctors implanted an ICD the following November."
Since his collapse, Jongeling has shared his story in the hopes that others will understand the importance of lifestyle changes and medical procedures and tests that may detect unknown problems.
