GILLETTE, Wyo. - The Spearfish boys cross country team finished third at the Wayne Chaney Memorial Invite Friday in Gillette, Wyo.

Jared Hicks and Randy Vette led the way for the Spartans with a pair of top 10 finishes. Hicks led the way in eighth with a time of 17 minutes, 45.64 seconds and Vette was ninth in 17:53.72.

Graham Heberlig was 26th, Tanner Triscori was 32nd and Tim Poper finished the course in 33rd place.

"This meet is normally very tough competition and I didn't know what to expect," said Spearfish head coach LeAnn Vette. "I was very pleased and coming off of back-to-back races is not always easy but the team responded well."

The Spearfish girls finished second in the junior varsity division, led by freshman Aimee Owen with a time of 2:23.04.

"Because our girls are so young, she's (Owen) been consistently our top girl and is just a tough competitor," said Vette.

Tera Potts led a pair of Sturgis runners in the girls varsity race finishing in ninth place with a time of 20:43.43. Taylor Fernen was the other Scooper runner who competed and was 32nd in 22:43.94.

Campbell County, Wyo, won the boys team title while Sheridan, Wyo., took the girls.

On the boys side, Aberdeen Central's Josh Wilson won the race in 16:26. Shaun Henderson of Huron took second in 16:59.
