Orion Thompson has been selected as the next head boys basketball coach for the Sturgis Scoopers pending Meade School District School Board approval.
Thompson will replace Ethan Dschaak, who resigned to become the principal at Stagebarn-Piedmont School.
Thompson graduated from the University of Sioux Falls in 1999. He then played in several semi-
professional basketball leagues thoughout the world from 1999-2001 before coaching in Salinas, Calif., in 2001. He has worked as a graduate assistant for South Dakota
State and coached at Si Tanka University. Thompson graduated with a master's degree in sports administration from SDSU.
For the past four years, Thompson was the associate head coach for the Dakota State University men's basketball team.
Osterloo named Kansas State's top freshman: Rapid City Stevens graduate Paige Osterloo capped a successful freshman golf season at Kansas State by winning the PI Premier Award as the top freshman female athlete at the university.
Osterloo had a stroke average of 80.1 per 18 holes with a couple of top-20 finishes in her debut at the Big XII school. Her best finish was 12th at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii after shooting a 13-over 229. Her second-round score of 69 during that event was a tournament best.
Osterloo recently earned a spot in the 2009 U.S. Women's Public Links Championship at Red Tail Golf Club in Deven, Mass., from June 22-27 after finishing second with a 75 to Clark's Kim Kaufman (74) at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls.
Rapid City Central to host tennis camp: The Rapid City Central Girls Tennis Camp will be Wednesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Tennis Center of the Black Hills.
The three sessions will be run by PTR certified instructors Daryl Paluch and Mark Sonnenfeld and include two NCAA Division I tennis players Billy and Whitney Paluch. The camp is open to grades 7-12.
Any girl interested in playing high school junior varsity or Varsity tennis is welcome. The cost is $50 for the camp. There are still some scholarships available. There will be T-shirts and prizes.

Black Hills State plans volleyball camp: The Black Hills State Volleyball Skills Camp on July 6-8 has space available for campers.
The first session is for grades 3-6 and runs from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $35. The second session is for grades 7-8 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at a cost of $55.
Grade is determined by the fall of 2009 and space is limited to 40 campers per session.
The BHSU Volleyball Training Camp is set for July 13-15 for high school players in grades 9-12 as of the fall of 2009. Cost is $100 and space is limited to 80 campers.
The first session runs from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for freshman and sophomores, juniors and seniors are on the court from 10:30 a.m. to noon and all grades play from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
For high school teams interested in the Summer Slam 2009 Volleyball Team Tournament it will be July 16-17.
There are two divisions of upper and lower high school with a limit of 40 teams. The deadline is July 1 at a cost of $200 per team or $150 if a school brings more than one team.

Rosaaen wins mixed martial arts title: Rapid City's Josh Rosaaen won his mixed martial arts match against Chad "The Grinder" Reiner by third-round TKO on Friday night.
The victory earned Rosaaen, who has now won four straight fights, the Cage Inc. middlewight title.
North Dakota star cowboys make college finals rodeo: Two former North Dakota high school rodeo standouts from Mandan are finishing their season with Central Wyoming College with a trip to the College National Finals Rodeo.
Riley Knoll is part of the six-member team that will represent the school at the finals Sunday through Saturday in Casper, Wyo. He's a two-time North Dakota high school saddle-bronc champion.
Ty Breuer, a three-time high school state champion in bareback riding, qualified for nationals
individually, finishing first in the region.
