BOX ELDER - The Belle Fourche Broncs showed that they can win a game with any number of weapons on Friday night as they rained on Douglas' homecoming parade with a 40-14 Black Hills Conference win at Patriot Stadium.
"That was (a butt) kicking," Douglas head coach Dave Broadie said. And it was hard to argue with him.
The Broncs rolled up over 300 yards of rushing offense on the night with Jess Cooper and Colen Kling doing most of the damage. Cooper, a 6-foot, 197-pound senior tailback had 19 carries for 190 yards and a score, while Kling, a 6-2, 222-pound senior fullback, ground his way to 94 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries.
"We really executed well tonight," Belle Fourche head coach Adam Nowowiejski said.
"I was pleased with how we came out and played,"
The Broncs showed everyone why they are undefeated so far this season as quarterback Alex Kling showed off his strong arm with a 40-yard touchdown pass to 6-foot-5 tight end Kyle Grubb to get things started for Belle Fourche. The Broncs' passing game wouldn't score again for the rest of the game, but it didn't need to, as the offensive line and running backs simply took over.
"We let our athletes play," Nowowiejski said simply.
The Broncs came back and capitalized on a Jordan Boston interception on their next possession, as Colen Kling bowled into the end zone from 4 yards out to make it a 14-0 game. Colen Kling tacked on another score with 9:58 left in the half on a 7-yard run to make it 21-0 heading into the half.
The Patriots had a couple of opportunities in the first half to get into the end zone, but two interceptions and a turnover on downs in Belle Fourche territory kept the Patriots from making the game a little more of a game.
Kling ripped off a 32-yard touchdown run to open the second half before Douglas failed to cover the ensuing kickoff, leading to a 17-yard run by Cooper to make it 34-0 with over 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.
Douglas' Wade Steier kept plugging away despite the deficit, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter and catching a remarkable 43-yard touchdown pass on what was essentially the last play of the game.
The Broncs (6-0 overall, 3-0 BHC) will head home to take on Custer in another Black Hills Conference game next Friday. That is Belle Fourche's last game before the game that everyone in the Hills seems to be anticipating takes place when the Broncs and St. Thomas More meet in Rapid City on Oct. 18.
