RAPID CITY - A former Bowling Green State University broadcaster will be the radio voice of the Rapid City Rush during its inaugural Central Hockey League season.
The team announced Tuesday that Daniel Nieves, 23, will serve as media relations director and will handle play-by-play duties for all 64 Rush home and away games on Rapid City's The Fox 100.3 FM when the CHL season starts in October.
Nieves, of Tavernier, Fla., graduated from Bowling Green with a major in telecommunications.
He spent four seasons as color commentator for the Bowling Green Falcons of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
During his time as color commentator, Nieves was named "Hockey Broadcaster of the Year" by the Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization for three consecutive years.
Nieves took over as the Falcons play-by-play broadcaster for the 2007-08 season, covering all 39 regular season and playoff games as well as covering BGSU men's and women's basketball and baseball games.
Nieves, weekly call-in show, "In the Box," a weekly radio call-in show that covered Falcon hockey, CCHA, and the NHL, and featured guest players and coaches in-studio was named BGRSO "Show of the Year" in only its second year.
The Rush begins its season on the road until the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center's new ice arena is completed in December.
In other news: According to the CHL Web site, the Rapid City Rush will open its inaugural season on Oct. 17-18 at 7:05 p.m. with a two-game series with the Colorado Eagles at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colo.
The Rush will play its first 13 games on the road before the team's first scheduled home game at the new Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena on Nov. 29, also against Colorado.
