HOT SPRINGS - The Belle Fourche Broncs took advantage of two fumbles by Hot Springs, scoring on both occasions in a 21-8 victory Friday night.
Hot Springs started the game with a nine-play, 84-yard touchdown drive which came via the rushing game. The Bison pounded the ball for three first downs on the drive behind their halfback Dustin Fischer. Matt Harkless capped the drive with a 19-yard touchdown scamper. The two-point conversion gave Hot Springs the 8-0 advantage.
But that is all the Bison would put on the scoreboard all night. The Belle Fourche defense held the Bison to fewer than 100 total yards the rest of the game.
Belle Fourche responded with a touchdown on its first drive of the game. The Broncs moved the ball methodically down field behind their running back Francois Barnaud, who scored on a 25-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.
The Broncs added a second score just minutes later when the Hot Springs long snapper launched the ball over the punter's head into the end zone. Jordan Boston fell on the loose ball to give Belle Fourche a 14-8 lead.
"We took advantage of the miscues tonight," said Belle Fourche head coach Adam Nowowiejski. "We came out ready to play, and got some points early and it held up."
Belle Fourche scored the final points of the night on a 19-yard scramble by Barnaud for his second score of the night.
The defenses dominated the second half of the game.
Hot Springs only managed 50 yards of total offense and two first downs. The Broncs also sputtered offensively, but took large chunks of time off the clock through their running game.
"The defenses stepped it up, but the offenses made a lot of mistakes. After that first drive that Hot Springs scored on we did what we do best which is wrapping up and tackling." Nowowiejski said.
Barnaud finished the game with 13 carries for 78 yards, and quarterback Alex Kling ran 11 times for 84 yards to lead the Broncs.
