RAPID CITY - Three home runs lifted Rapid City Post 320 to a 7-4 American Legion win over the Wheatland, Wyo. Lobos at Pete Lien Field on Friday night.
The Stars (39-12 overall) were playing their first home game since the Black Hills Gold faced Team USA in a softball game on July 15. Weather wiped out scheduled games against Gillette, Wyo., and Pierre.
Post 320 got to Wheatland starting pitcher Kyle Lauck in the third frame.
With the score tied at 1-1, 320's Chris Bingham and Chris Lindemann both walked, Nate Jacobson reached on an infield hit to load the bases for the Stars leading hitter Kyle Starkey, who promptly delivered the ball over the right-center field fence to clear the bases.
Zach Cimburek followed with a single, and Jared Jacobson then blasted Lauck's offering over the left field fence as Post 320 tacked on six runs in the frame.
"This was a good game for us," said Post 320 manager Jim Brandt. "We hit the ball with a little pop. We played good defense, and we got to use three different pitchers."
Wheatland, stymied by starter Brad Winkelman and reliever Tommy Barbour, found some success in the sixth inning against Nate Jacobson as John Daly delivered a two-run triple. Daly would score on a fielder's choice as the Wyoming team pulled to within 7-4.
Jacobson would then get out of any further trouble in the seventh inning when he was aided by a double play liner to end the game.
Daly singled in the second inning and scored the Lobos' first run of the game on Blake Vaughn's RBI single.
Winkelman would then help his own cause with a solo blast to left-
center fieldleading off the Stars second inning to tie the game.
Heatherly did a nice job for Wheatland as he kept the hard hitting 320 team off the scoreboard when he entered the game in relief with one out in the third inning.
"They have a resilient ball club," said Brandt. "Our defense was solid and our pitchers did a good job of getting the ball over and letting their fielders make the plays."
Winkelman fanned four in his three innings on the mound to pick up the win.
"It's that time of year again (regional) so we are trying to set things up. We will use today to see what we can get out of some different kids," said Brandt, whose team will face Spearfish in its first regional game on Wednesday.
