WALL - Philip's 30th win of the season was a big one.

The Scotties overcame a 2-0 deficit and defeated Wall in a five-set thriller to claim the Region 7B title and earn a spot in the state Class B high school volleyball tournament.

Philip won by the scores of 13-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 15-10.

"We came out in the first and second games a little sluggish, not quite playing our game," Philip head coach Kim Bouman said. "We came out strong in the third game. We started attacking much better, moving and covering much better. In the fourth and fifth games, that's what helped us."

Wall head coach Stephanie Williams said it was a good match.

"It was a battle - we knew that was going to happen," she said. "We came in as the underdog, because we lost to them in five earlier in the season. (But) the girls came out tough."

The Eagles were sharp early, winning the first two games and holding a lead in Game 3. However, Williams said the momentum really shifted after that.

"We were ahead in the third game and then (we) started playing careful," she added. "You can't win playing careful, so that was the factor I guess."

Three familiar players - Marissa Mann, Sierra Hook and Lindsay Mann - led the Scotties to the victory.

Marissa Mann had 18 kills, one solo and one assisted block, and 23 digs. Hook added 15 kills, five solo blocks and five service aces, while Lindsay Mann notched 10 kills and an ace.

Defensively, Philip was led by Kayla O'Connell, who had 24 digs and went 26-for-31 on serve receive. Taylor Holman paced the Scotties with 37 set assists.

For Wall, Muriel Kjerstad had 19 kills and three solo blocks. Katrina Kjerstad added nine kills, three solo blocks, one assisted block and three service aces.

Madison McLaughlin notched 10 kills and 11 digs. Kaylee Gallino also had a solid all-around game for the Eagles, posting 37 set assists, 13 digs, five aces and a block assist. Katelyn Crown paced the defense with 19 digs and also went 52-for-53 on serve receive.

The match featured a couple of the state's winningest teams. Philip improved to 30-3 with the victory, while Wall finished with a school-record 28 wins, compared to just four losses.

"I told them they've got nothing to hang their heads about, they're one of the best teams in the state," Williams said. "It's too bad we're both in the same region, but that's part of the playoffs."

The Scotties beat the Eagles in their other match this season - 25-21, 25-12, 21-25, 28-30, 15-9 - on Oct. 4 in Philip.

Philip begins play at the state tournament on Nov. 15 in Sioux Falls. It will be the Scotties' first appearance at state in the past four years, and second since 2000.
