CUSTER - Coach Aaron Hunsley received lots of free advice on how to beat Custer when he took over the reigns of the Belle Fourche soccer program this year.
"Everybody said that all you had to do to beat Custer is shut down the Roddy boys," he said.
Mission unaccomplished Tuesday afternoon in Custer as senior Jake Roddy scored six goals and younger brother, Luke, a sophomore, chipped in with two more as third-ranked Custer bombed Belle Fourche 9-1 in Class A high school soccer action.
"Needless to say we failed," said Hunsley. "But they are very good players, and they really know how to pick apart a defense."
They certainly did Tuesday as both Jake and Luke were simply able to overwhelm the smaller, more inexperienced Belle Fourche defenders. Their ability to move freely in the attack zone allowed the Custer midfielders and defenders to creep forward and compress most of the game's action into the Belle Fourche zone. Nothing good could come from that as the two brothers were able to score in almost every conceivable fashion including a Jake penalty kick goal in the second half.
Jake wasted no time asserting his dominance in the game. Three minutes into the game, he corralled a loose ball near the midfield line, began a long run up the left sideline, made a nifty crossover dribble past the last defender, angled to the goal and drove the ball past the helpless goalkeeper.
'That would be just the first of five unassisted goals Jake would score in the match. All resulted from superior ball handling skills that typically allowed him to beat defenders almost at will. Jake added two more first-half goals wrapping them around a pair of goals by Luke.
That the score was not more lopsided at intermission was a credit to the play by Belle Fourche goalkeeper Aaron Schanzenbach, who deflected clear a number of point blank scoring chances.
"The Belle goalie had a lot of real good saves," said Custer coach Craig Black. "Frankly the score could have been much higher though I thought their kids showed some good skills, but today we just didn't give them much of an opportunity to do what they could do."
The lone Belle Fourche goal of the night was scored at the 80 minute mark when Jacob Ward found the ball at his feet following a flurry of activity in front of the net.
Custer (6-2-1 overall) hosts St. Thomas More on Thursday in a 5 p.m. game. Belle Fourche next plays this weekend as the team travels to Harrisburg on Friday before meeting No. 1-ranked Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday in Yankton.
HOT SPRINGS 3, DOUGLAS 0: Hot Springs' Kyle Maciejewskie scored a pair of goals as the Bison picked up their fifth win in six games with a 3-0 victory over Douglas in prep boys soccer at Sioux Park.
In the first half, Maciejewskie scored on a penalty kick in the 10th minute to put the Bison up 1-0. Just before the break, Jaron Smith took a crossing pass from Brandon Janis and put it in the back of the net for Hot Springs' second goal. Maciejewskie put the game away when he scored in the upper right hand corner from 18 yards out in the 55th minute.
"Douglas was young but are real aggressive," said Hot Spring head coach Dave Rooks. "It was kind of shaky play to begin with but we got into playing our kind of defense in the second half."
Hot Springs (5-5 overall) face St. Thomas More at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Sioux Park.
