SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Black Hills State advanced to the "Elite 8" of the NAIA Division II basketball tournament by claiming a 63-48 win over Eastern Oregon in the second round of the tourney Friday at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.

Lacey Haughian topped Black Hills with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Snjezena Dojcinovic added 10 points and eight rebounds while Katelynn Lamb chipped in 10 points for the winners.

Sheena Henderson led Eastern Oregon with 13 points. Jenny Fiso and Tiffanie Ulmer added 11 and 10 points respectively for the Mountaineers.

"We were keying on Henderson," said Black Hills State senior Lindsey Buthe. "Our defense sets the tone," added senior classmate Haughian.

The win marked the 28th victory of the season for the Lady Yellow Jackets an all-time single season high.

The previous record for wins (27) was set by the 1997 team which advanced to the NAIA national championship game before losing. "It's a great accomplishment for the program and the team," said Black Hills State head coach Mark Nore.

"I'm very proud of how the kids defended. I was pleased with our overall effort."

The win may have been a costly one however as starting guard Bailey Chevron suffered an injury late in the game and went to the locker room on crutches.

"It's hard to be excited because it hurts to see Bailey suffer," said Nore.

BHSU's defense limited the Cascade Conference champions to 28 percent field goal shooting in the opening half.

Led by Haughian's 10 points the Lady Yellow Jackets tallied 22 points in the paint.

Black Hills State held a 30-21 halftime advantage.

The Dakota Athletic Conference and tournament champion opened the second half with a 7-0 run.

A 3-pointer by Mobridge sophomore Brittany Fuhrman gave the Lady Jackets a 37-21 advantage.

"We got two good steals right away at the start of the second half," said Haughian.

Black Hills state (28-5) faces Northwestern Iowa College at 7 p.m. M.D.T. tonight.

The Lady Jackets will be looking to avenge a 20-point loss suffered to the Red Raiders in Orange City, Iowa in November.

Six of the eight teams left are from either the Greater Plains Athletic conference or from the DAC.
