The Sturgis Scoopers, led by Clay and Kyle Kopplin, won the season-opening Sturgis Invitational at Boulder Canyon Country Club on Monday.

Clay Kopplin shot a 73 to beat his brother Kyle by two shots for individual medalist honors. Clay Kopplin was one of the day's most consistent players, shooting a 36 on the front nine, followed by a 37 on the back. The Scoopers fired a team score of 319 to top second-place Rapid City Stevens by 15 shots.

Stevens' Mac Young (75), Sturgis' Zac Smith (79) and Custer's Johnny Couch (79) rounded out the individual top five. Stevens' Lance Beyer, Central's Thomas Birgnheir, Belle Fourche's Tyler Burr and Lead-Deadwood teammates Zach Fox and Jordan Smith rounded out the top 10.

Lead-Deadwood (355), Rapid City Central (362) and Custer (367) finished third through fifth in the team race.

The West River Open is the next big area high school tournament and will be held at Spearfish Canyon Country Club on Thursday and Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City on Friday. Action will get underway both days at 8 a.m. and players will play 18 holes both days.
