SIOUX FALLS - With a loaded lineup and two consecutive titles, it's not surprising that Sioux Falls Roosevelt has a major presence on this year's Class 11AA all-state football team.

The Rough Riders, who defeated Washington 28-24 in the state finals, were honored with five senior selections on the team, as chosen by the South Dakota Football Coaches Association.

"For the last two years, our kids have really bought into the fact that they're a team," said Roosevelt coach Brent DeBoer, whose squad finished 11-2. "It doesn't really matter who gets the tackles or scores the touchdowns.

"Most of these kids are two-year or three-year starters, and I don't think you can be successful unless you have that consistency in your program. They all put in the time to make themselves better."

Roosevelt's stingy defense accounted for three all-state spots, led by linebacker Preston Evans. The 6-foot, 210-pound North Dakota State recruit led the Rough Riders with 88 tackles in 2007 - including nine for loss.

"Preston was the heart and soul of this football team," DeBoer said of Evans, who tallied 214 career tackles. "I've never been involved with a more confident, loyal and committed athlete."

Also making the squad was defensive end Isaac Jorgensen, a 6-foot-5, 226-pounder who had 48 tackles and 7½ sacks. Jorgensen also intercepted four passes and returned two of them for touchdowns.

"He has a knack for being in the right place at right time and making big plays," DeBoer said.

The third defensive honoree for Roosevelt was tackle Johnny Beltran, who had 52 tackles and three fumble recoveries for a unit that allowed less than 11 points a game.

Offensively, Roosevelt was sparked by running back David Sturdevant, who rushed for 1,359 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2007. The senior capped a stellar prep career by gaining 233 yards and scoring two TDs in the state finals, earning the title of Joe Robbie MVP.

Also honored as all-state was guard Aaron Ledeboer, who helped pave the way for Roosevelt to compile more than 3,700 rushing yards in 2007.

Runner-up Washington landed three players on the squad after making the state finals for the third time in school history. The group is led by linebacker Tim Marlette, who tallied 136 tackles, 6½ sacks and two interceptions in his defensive role.

"Tim was a big reason for the success of the Warriors the past three seasons," said Coach Brian Hermanson.

Also making the squad for Washington were defensive back Joe Stupka, whose 126 total tackles included 15 in the finals against Roosevelt; and offensive guard Derek Shafer, whose blocking helped the Warriors rush for more than 2,300 yards as a team.

Four other schools placed three players on the all-state team - Brandon Valley, O'Gorman, Watertown and Yankton.

Brandon Valley was led by 6-2, 280-pound offensive tackle Will Castle, a three-year starter who helped the Lynx rush for 5.7 yards a carry in 2007.

For O'Gorman, fullback Danny Isaacson set the tone by rushing 160 times for 944 yards and 11 TDs as a senior. For his career, Isaacson ran for 2,676 yards and 36 touchdowns.

Quarterback Josh Hanson sparked Watertown by running for 444 yards and seven touchdowns and throwing for 1,382 yards and 15 TDs.

Yankton was led by defensive back Tyrel Kool, who made 81 tackles as strong safety in an injury-plagued year.
