Free-throw shooting helped Custer to a 61-55 Black Hills Conference boys basketball victory over Belle Fourche on Saturday in Belle Fourche.
Custer netted 17-of-23 shots from the charity stripe while Belle Fourche scored on 13-of-21 attempts.
Jake Roddy paced the Wildcats with 23 points. Darin Smith recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Custer shot 50 percent from the field (21-of-42) while Belle Fourche hit 43 percent (20-of-47). The Wildcats also held a 33-24 advantage on the boards.
Jason Webb paced the Broncs with 13 points. Jake Walker and Alex Kling also hit double figures with 12 points apiece. Brady Bisgaard added 10 points.
Both teams continue with Black Hills Conference action. Belle Fourche (2-4 overall, 2-4 BHC) travels to Newell on Tuesday. Custer (5-1, 2-0) hosts Hill City on Thursday.
Newell 53, Hot Springs 41: Patrick Gatzke scored a game-high 21 points to lead Newell in a 53-41 Black Hills Conference win over Hot Springs in boys basketball action in Hot Springs on Saturday.
Tyler Mutchler was the only other Irrigator in double-figure scoring with 13 points.
"Newell controlled the tempo and the boards and never really let Hot Springs in the game," Hot Springs head coach Kim Henningsen said. "(Patrick) Gatzke was impressive inside and out. Foul trouble plagued the Bison."
Jesse Monfore paced the Bison with 15 points. Blake McPherson scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Newell (2-2 overall, 2-2 BHC) hosts BHC foe Belle Fourche on Tuesday.
Hot Springs (2-2 overall, 1-2 BHC) faces a weekend of conference action. The Bison host Custer on Friday and then travel to Lead-Deadwood on Saturday.
MOORCROFT, WYO. 62, GUERNSEY-SUNRISE, WYO. 34: The Moorcroft Wolves outscored the Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings 34-15 in the second half for a 62-34 win in boys basketball action at Moorcroft on Saturday afternoon,
Hall also had 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. DeeJay Hacklin had 14 points and Bryse Lang 10 for the Wolves, who moved to 6-1 overall.
Guernsey was paced by Rage Geringer and Blake Nelson who netted 14 points apiece. The Vikings dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
Moorcroft begins conference play at Sundance on Tuesday.
Gayville-Volin 65, Colome 61: Casey Nelson (19 points), Parker Erickson (16) and Keith Martinez (13) all scored in double figures as Gayville-Volin recorded a 65-61 win over Colome at the East-West Classic in Chamberlain on Saturday.
Leighton Baker led the Cowboys with 19 points. Ethan Vober added 18 and Ben Schultz scored 12 points. Colome (1-3 overall) plays Lyman on Monday.
Gayville-Volin (3-1 overall) travels to Scotland on Tuesday.
Dakota Christian 60, Jones County 59 OT: A free throw by Jamie Veurink with 0.3 seconds left on the clock clinched the win for Dakota Christian. The Cadets (3-2 overall) downed Jones County 60-59 in overtime at the East-West Classic in Chamberlain on Saturday.
Mitch VanderPol led the victors with 24 points. Veurink netted 19 points.
Tyler Buxcel scored a game-high 27 points for Jones County. Kyle Venard added 13 points.
Jones County (4-2 overall) travels to Wall on Thursday.
Chamberlain 99, Canton 60: Joe Hieb scored a game-high 21 points to pace Chamberlain as the Cubs rolled past Canton 99-60 in boys basketball action at the East-West Classic in Chamberlain on Saturday.
Josh Miranda and Levi Andera each added 14 points in the win. Chamberlain (3-2 overall) travels to Wessington Springs on Tuesday.
Jared Twedt scored 17 points to lead Canton (2-3 overall).
