RAPID CITY - Lead's Dani Bellet and Rapid City's Brogan Pappel won the first Wells Fargo Junior Tour western region event at Arrowhead Country Club on Friday in the girls' and boys' 16- to 18-year-old age division.

Pappel fired a 77 to tie Spearfish's Patrick Hurst before winning the tournament with a bogey on hole No. 4, a 370-yard, downhill, dogleg right.

"That's not exactly how you want to win a tournament," Pappel said after finishing the event on his home course with a bogey. "But I came out on top. Home course advantage, I guess."

Hurst caught a bad break when his drive found the right rough and his backswing was obstructed by a spruce tree, forcing him to punch out into the fairway.

"That's just golf," Hurst said.

Both Pappel and Hurst's wedges into the green went a little long and right. Neither managed to get up and down, and Hurst's extra stroke getting away from the tree proved to be the difference. Pappel's par putt from about 15 feet went a good 4 feet past the hole, but he stepped up and drained the second putt for the win.

"Oh my god, are you kidding me?" Pappel said of his reaction to the par putt. "A two putt. All I had to do was lag it to about two inches, not four feet. But it went in."

Bellet, fresh off of her Class A girls championship, shot a 79 on a course that she had only played twice before - both times in Wells Fargo events - for the win. Rapid City's Megan Byram finished second with a score of 87.

"It wasn't as good a score as I would have liked," Bellet said. "But it's a pretty tough course. There are a lot of bunkers and a lot of trees, so if you don't hit the fairway - which I didn't very often today - you get stuck hitting from behind a lot of trees."

Other winners included Kiley Phares and Kasey Klapprodt in the 11-under girls' and boys' divisions, respectively. Phares shot a 62 to top Megan Clayburn with a 65 on nine holes. Klapprodt fired a 44 to better Matt Jensen and Cody Kuehl with 46s. Jensen took second place on a scorecard playoff.

Autumn Schulz won the

12-13 girls division with a score of 106, beating Cassidy Volmer by one shot. Sam Musch shot an 82 to top P.J. Wetzel, who shot an 84.

Erin Cheever (89) and Joe Courtney (86) won the girls' and boys' 14-15 divisions, respectively.

The Wells Fargo Junior Tour is a branch of the South Dakota Golf Association. Golfers are put into regions - southeast, northeast and west - and play six regional events. The top point leaders after those events then play in the Wells Fargo Point Championship at Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre on Aug. 4.
