RAPID CITY - Defending champion Matt Pridey, of Sioux Falls, holds the lead after the first round of the SDGA Men's Amateur Championship.

Pridey shot a 4-under par 67 on Friday at Arrowhead Country Club to take a one-stroke lead over Ryan Jansa, of Sioux Falls.

Pridey, who set an SDGA record with a 12-under 204 total last year, had six birdies and two bogeys in his round, which included hitting a tee shot out of bounds on the par-five 14th hole.

Jansa, who holds the state record with six amateur titles, last won the championship in 2004.

Rapid City's Tim Kalil is in third place after shooting a 69, while Brookings' Scott O'Brien, and Jeff Salter, Phil Henzlik and Shane Tipton, all of Rapid City, are all tied for fourth at 1-under-par 70.

Kalil is coming off a second place finish in the Match Play Championships where he was downed by Sioux Falls' Tom Carlson 2-and-1.

Area golfers Tyler Evenson, of Lead, and Rapid City's Ron Farris and Tyler Rachetto are sitting in a tie for eighth place after shooting eve par 71. Danny Amundson, of Sioux Falls, also shot a 71 after the first day of action.

Rapid Citians Rick Brummer and Steve Beardsley are tied for 18th place after shooting 73 on the opening day. Brummer is this year's Two-Man Championship winner.

Hometown golfer Geoff Mead, who shot a 74, is tied with Spearfish's Wally Byrne and five other golfers for 22nd place. Mead finished third at last year's event.

Day 2 action gets under way at 7:30 a.m. today at Arrowhead Country Club and the 54-hole championship concludes on Sunday.
