RAPID CITY - Students entering middle school this year, who are interested in participating in sports, must have a physical before they can participate in the school athletics.
Barring severe illness or injury, physical exams are good for a three-year period. Students must complete an interim pre-participation history form each year. Parents must sign permission before students can participate in activities.

Beran signs to play basketball in Germany
BROOKINGS - Recent South Dakota State graduate Ben Beran signed a contract to play professional basketball in Germany with USC Heidelberg.
Beran brings his strong work ethic, exceptional leadership skills and scoring prowess to tradition rich USC Heidelberg, a team seeking its 14th league championship.
Beran returns to Europe, where he recently joined a group of 12 current and former collegiate basketball players to spend 16 days competing against some of the top professional teams in Bulgaria and in the Czech Republic as a member of the Athletes in Action international touring men's basketball team.
The Victor, Iowa native, played through injuries for much of his final season as a Jackrabbit, but still averaged 12.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, and became the 38th member of the SDSU 1,000 point club. Beran finished his career ranked 11th all-time at SDSU with 1,285 points.
Baseball league forms in Southern Black Hills
CHADRON, Neb. - Men's amateur baseball has come to the southern Black Hills with the Grasslands South Hills Baseball League.
The four teams that will compete are the Custer Granite, the Newcastle, Wyo., Bulls, Rushville, Neb., and the Chadron Titans. Doubleheader games are played on Sunday afternoons and each team has played 16 regular-season games.
Chadron is in first place and undefeated at 16-0, Custer is second at 11-5, Rushville is third with a 3-13 record and Newcastle is last at 0-16.
A regional tournament will be played in Chadron on Aug. 9 and Aug. 10 to determine who goes to the state tournament. Chadron is ranked fourth in the Nebraska in amateur baseball.
NASCAR race car on display in Sturgis
STURGIS - The No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger driven by 2008 Daytona 500 champion Ryan Newman will be on display Saturday through Aug. 8 at the intersection of Lazelle Street and Kinship Road in Sturgis during the 68th annual Sturgis motorcycle rally.
Fans can also take part in an interactive pit crew experience, testing their tire-changing abilities by using an air gun on a racing tire mounted in a replica quarter-panel from the race car. The event is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
