RAPID CITY - Rapid City Post 320's right fielder Zach Cimburek pounded out six hits in two games leading Post 320 to two victories, 9-4 and 10-5, over Spearfish on Tuesday at Pete Lien Field.
In the first game, with Post 320 leading 1-0 in the third, Chris Lindemann tripled to start the inning, and Nate Johnson and Cimburek both had RBI base hits, to give Post 320 an early 3-0 advantage.
Post 320 starter Adam Carroll strolled through the first 4-1/3 innings using a sharp curveball almost as often as he threw his fastball, setting up Spearfish hitters for either high fastballs or more curveballs for strikeouts or easy ground balls.
"A week ago, we lost two to Spearfish over there," said Post 320 head coach Jim Brandt. "So this was good for us tonight. We changed the pitching up a little tonight and threw a young man who just gets his pitches in there. He's just a heck of an athlete."
Meanwhile, Post 320's offense hammered out 12 hits in the first game, including three from Cimburek and two from Kyle Starkey.
Spearfish battled back early in the game, cutting the Stars lead to 3-2, after a couple of Post 320 errors allowed two runs to score. The first was a would-be double play ball which was bobbled and the second was a base hit to right field, which went past the right fielder and scored the two runs.
The first game was over when …
Post 320 exploded for a four-run fourth inning after Reed Rice and Chris Bingham both singled, and an error scored a run. With runners on first and second, the table was set for Cimburek, who lined a triple into the right field corner scoring two more runs and putting the game out of reach for Spearfish.
In the second game, Spearfish jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. But in the bottom half of the inning, Cimburek jacked a 400 foot two-run home run to right field, cutting the Spearfish lead in half, 4-2.
Post 320 starter Kyle Olson then settled in after his rough start. He allowed one more run for the rest of the game, fanned nine Spearfish hitters and went the distance for the win.
The second game was over when …
Rapid City had another big inning in the second ball game scoring four runs in the fifth to take the lead 6-5.
Spearfish committed three consecutive errors scoring one run, and setting the table for the top of the Post 320 line-up. Lindemann and Jacobson then both doubled down the line, and Cimburek gave Post 320 the lead with a RBI single to right.
Tuesday's MVP
Zach Cimburek went six-for-seven on the day with seven RBI, a triple and a homerun.
"I'm just seeing the ball well," Cimburek said. "These guys beat us pretty good the first time, so it felt good."
