RAPID CITY - Aberdeen Central outscored Rapid City Stevens 21-4 from the free throw line en route to a 52-42 non-conference win at Carold Heier Gymnasium on Friday night.

Hilary Peterson led the Golden Eagles from the Eastern South Dakota Conference with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Sophia McDermott chipped in 11 more for the winners.

The game was even for the first eight minutes as both teams managed to put 14 points on the scoreboard.

Aberdeen outscored Stevens 19-10 in the second stanza to take a 33-24 lead at the intermission.

The Raiders committed 22 turnovers and had 20 fouls in the contest.

"We need to focus on our turnovers and fouls," said Stevens head coach Michelle Klapprodt.

Stevens had five more field goals and out-shot the Golden Eagles from the floor, but couldn't offset the free throw deficit.

"You can't expect to be in many ballgames when you have a lot of turnovers and send the other team to the foul line," Klapprodt said.

A bright spot for the Raiders was the play of Calli Bechtel, Brooke Garner and Amy Sykora.

The trio combined to score 33 points as Bechtel had a game-high 18. She also snared nine rebounds as Stevens held a 31-21 advantage on the glass.

"I was very impressed with Bechtel and Garner's play in the post," Klapprodt said. "Amy (Sykora) ran the team well tonight directing the offense."

Both teams will be back in action today as Aberdeen takes on Rapid City Central while Stevens (0-5) entertains Pierre in games starting at 1:45 p.m.
