SPEARFISH - Sunday's American Legion Baseball doubleheader between Spearfish and Powell, Wyo., at Black Hills Power Stadium was a tale of two different games.
Spearfish captured a 9-8 win in eight innings in the opener. However, Powell evened the score and earned a split, taking an 8-2 victory in the second game.
The two teams were deadlocked at 8-8 after the regulation seven innings in the first game. Jordan Johnson reached base on a fielding error in the home half of the eighth. Jess Copper lined a single, putting runners at first and third. Dustin Wisener then stroked a walk-off single to decide the game.
A six-run fourth inning by Spearfish snapped a 1-1 tie. Cody Rosenau, Chase Bridges, Cooper and Wisener each drove in a run during the inning.
The Wyoming visitors rallied with four tallies in the fifth and three in the sixth, taking an 8-7 lead.
Allen Hemeyer singled and stole second base for Post 164 in the home half of the sixth. Ryan Royer drove in Hemeyer with the game-tying single.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Spearfish plated the game-deciding run in the bottom of the eighth.
Johnson and Hemeyer each scored two runs for the host squad. Justin Kemp, Cooper, Royer, Rick White and Rosenau added one run each. Wisener contributed two hits and two RBI.
Cooper pitched the first 5-1/3 innings before Kemp came in for a relief appearance for the final 2-2/3 innings and was the winning hurler.
"In the first game, we jumped all over them right way," said Spearfish manager Chris Geuke, who was filling in for Matt Kemp. "Jess Cooper was big for us. Justin Kemp came in and got the job done in relief."
Powell banged out 14 hits in the second game to claim the win. The visitors plated one run in the first, three in the second and two runs apiece in the third and fourth.
Spearfish entered the scoring column in the home half of the fifth when Cooper blasted a two-run triple.
Spearfish, 33-15, hosts Sturgis at 7 p.m. in a nine-inning game tonight.
