The first South Dakota Sportswriters Association high school football polls of the 2009 season were released Monday and, unsurprisingly, East River teams dominated all six classes.
Sioux Falls Washington received eight of nine first place votes to take the top spot in Class 11AA, West Central had eight of nine to take the top spot in Class 11A, Tri-Valley took eight of nine en route to being ranked No. 1 in Class 11B and Howard (9AA), Avon (9A) and Hitchcock-Tulare (9B) were the top teams in the three 9-man classes.
Only four West River teams
were even ranked in the six classes, with St. Thomas More receiving
one first-place vote in Class 11A to come in at No. 2; Winner
getting one first-place vote in Class 11B for the No. 2 spot there
and Lyman getting one first-place vote on its way to a No. 3
ranking in Class 9AA. Harding County came in at No. 5 in Class
9A.
Other West River teams to receive votes but not make the top five in their respective classes were: Belle Fourche (11A), Stanley County (11B), Philip (9AA), Gregory (9AA), Wall (9A), Colome (9B) and Jones County (9B).
